Contrary to popular belief, starting position hasn’t meant a whole lot at the 1.5-mile tracks this season. In fact, the average starting position for the winners on this track type in 2019 is 12.4, and in the last two races, they’ve started 23rd (Hamlin at Kansas) and 24th (Truex at Las Vegas 2). Here at Texas, Denny Hamlin went to victory lane in the spring, and he started 6th. Still, eight of the top twelve finishers starting 11th or worse, with seven of them starting 16th or worse.
